Chapter 16

Interlude
Maqku forces realized a problem had formed in their attacks of the Vulpen. Somehow they had managed to nuetralize the first wave with seeminly no casualties. It was a small set-back, and gave them valuable information into the capabilities that the Vulpen had for defense.

The Vulpens on the other hand wondered how long they could hold up. Their new friends could definately provide enough protection, but they continually wondered if it was enough. Afterall, if the Aqku were so strong, then why hadn't they already won the war?

Haz'rd Vulp
Prelude
It was a good early start to the defense. There were even a couple of jokes here and there about pushing into Maqku territory and just decimating them all. They thought it might be possible, but there was still a sullen feeling in the air.

They were under attack by their old allies, and were getting help from an old enemy. Between Vulpen and Aqku there was trust, but it wasn't yet solid, and that gave little comfort to Haz'rd.

Action
The next wave seemed to not decide to come the day after. Haz'rd almost wanted to feel sullen for this to happen, but would rather to not have to fight like this. He preferred the up close fighting, the intensity of it, seeing what happened to his enemy firsthand.

Another day past, and the next incursion had come. Unfortunately it was on the Eastern flank, a place they didn't think the Maqku would come from. The messeges were erratic, but the Aqku had managed to set up some minor defense to slow them down. It looked as though the whole Maqku force was going to be coming from the East. Everyone seemed to have this belief, though something told Haz that it wasn't right.

Aqku magic could transport a great number of them, but the damage to everything besides blades would be great. Elders from around the Vulpen nation were in support of this, yet Haz still wasn't quite sure of which route to take.

Choices
  • Go to the Eastern border with everyone else.
  • Stay put with contingent of men.
Resolution
It was indeed a good choice for Haz'rd to stay and defend where he was at. Four days after the first Maqku incursion, another one went at where the first was. They didn't start by firing shots, they went straight into the forest.

Vulpen scouts had reported that as many as ten thousand Maqku troops were marching straight towards a Vulpen village. Haz'rd told the scout to send word to the village, to get the people out immediately.

Haz'rd only had about a hundred troops under his command right now, but thankfully just over two hundred Aqku joined him just as the village was told to evacuate.

Semper Fidelis
Prelude
The blindfold was off, and Semper was just waking up. He could see an older looking Vulpen talking with a young adult male. He couldn't understand a bit of the words, but it felt as though they were talking about him.

Semper noticed the younger of the two look over, and he must have noticed him being awake. The Vulpen made a gesture and spoke something, then the Elder looked over. Speaking something the younger left the hut they were in.

Coming closer the elder sat down in front of Semper with his legs folded and spoke, "My fore-father could remember a time when you're kind was unknown to us. You've brought us technology which we've embraced, but you're kind is wicked. You should have been killed outright, but you will tell us things we want to know."

Action
Semper found it hard to swallow but managed to spit out before the Elder could ask anything else, "Have your people ever called yourselves the Phren?"

Pausing for a moment the Elder spoke, "How did you come about asking this?"

"It's," started Semper, then realizing he probably would have to divulge everything, "Your people have tortured Maqku, worn our skins, you've debased us in more ways I can think of with this act, and you will likely do the same to me," pausing, "I've told you the only question I came to ask. My plan was to capture one of your people, ask them, and set them free without weapons. Your plan is to flay my skin. I will tell you nothing."

Choices
  • Bluff.
  • Be resolute.
Resolution
The elder looked over Semper then said something to another Vulpen. Semper black out again after feeling a punch to the side of the head.

Some time later he awoke feeling a great deal of pain. His weapons were gone, and he found he was only wearing pants. The cold had already gotten to his feet, but after rubbing them vigorously for a bit they still had feeling in them.

He wondered what part of the forest he was in, and hoped that Maqku forces would soon find him.

Ninemeindrol
Prelude
Word had come from North that Aqku and Vulpen had formed an alliance, and that a great many warriors were being sent into their territory to help them defend, and soon to start an offense. Piouses were being rallied to personally see to it that the Vulpens survived. Then there would be a push into Maqku territory to end the war.

Action
Decisions were made swiftly, and the area unde Ninemeindrol's control went abuzz with the news. The few hundred warriors and orderlies were gathered, and in a flash were moved into Vulpen territory.

Mind's of many Pious' converged into a single being to figure out the best plan of action. The strongest seers were sent to spot where the troops should be, while the best thinkers formulated plans around this information.

It was decided that Ninemeindrol's troops would be placed accordingly.

Choices
  • Get involved with Vulpen forces.
  • Stay to the Side.
Resolution
Ninemeindrol felt it would be best to help the Vulpen immediately. A premonition he had told him that the results of being with them would be beneficial. He told his troops and healers to get aquainted with the Vulpen quickly, for a battle would soon be near.

Shinobi
Prelude
During his young years Shinobi had wanted to fight for the glory of God for the Aqku nation. It seemed that soon he would have his chance, as word of fighting in Maqku territory would soon become a distint possibility for him.

Action
Transporting into another nation was a weird sensation. Shinobi felt at ease once he had his feet on the ground, but during the movement it felt like nothing he could have ever imagined. It was like falling and running at the same time.

As things got settled he was informed that there would be some time to kill before hand.

Choices
  • Practice using sword.
  • Find someone with some dice.
Resolution
After being told that battle would soon be at hand, Shinobi thought it would be best to practice with the sword. He found a training partner he had learned with and they sparred for a few hours without rest. When he was done he did as ordered and talked with a couple of Vulpen, even getting sight a couple of times of the one they called Haz'rd Vulp.

Dumbass
Prelude
Ever since he started training people called him stupid. He was good at smashing stuff, but for some reason his thinking and social skills caused him to trip up. He wasn't particularly stupid or a non-social butterfly, he just had a bad habit of slipping at the wrong time.

Action
Dumbass noticed this whooshing sound flow around him, and then felt himself standing in a forest around a bunch of other warriors. News was circulating that it was only a matter of time before some hacking and slashing could be done. Before then, Dumbass had this strange urge to chase after some wildlife, but found himself desiring medical attention.

Choices
  • Chase wildlife.
  • Seek medical attention.
Resolution
Going to the first orderly he saw, Dumbass asked the man to check out his leg which he felt pain in. The orderly checked it and noticed an arrow had gone clear through the one side and out the other.

Taking out the arrow carefully the orderly was quick to apply bandages to stop the bleeding. A question was asked about why there was an arrow in the leg, but Dumbass said he hadn't even noticed it there.

Ochi Reci
Prelude
Ochi Reci had gained some knowledge first hand in healing wounds when a wild animal had attacked a fellow student. It was good he had gotten some previous training, or the student likely would have died. He was looking forward to using those skills to help his fellow country-men.

Action
Like other Aqku, he found himself transported into an area of trees. This was an unusual feeling to be in, like he was trapped. Ochi Reci felt this before when he was locked into a small room, but he could see for a distance in certain spots. That didn't stop his breathing from becoming shallow, and his heart racing.

Choices
  • Stay calm, try to think about something else.
  • Freak out.
Resolution
Ochi Reci was calm for a short and stayed so after treating a fellow Aqkuman of an arrow in the leg. Thinking about how an arrow got there, and the fact that he hadn't noticed was a little bit troubling, but he put things at ease for Ochi.

There hadn't even been a battle yet, and already there were wounds. This thought was slightly troubling, but talking with some Vulpens and learning that they knew the woods well helped things slightly.
